“Kayakaki” Pampas grass cutting

[ Time required:one-day ]

In old days, every household helped each other to maintain the thatched roof. This includes cutting the Pampas grass (material for thatched roof) in Autumn, storing in the attic until needed, and helped to replace the roof. However, due to the decrease in the number of thatched-roof houses and the aging population, thatching nowadays are undertaken by thatch roofing companies and materials are sourced from outside Miyama.

We started the “Kayakaki” under the guidance of our thatched roofer friend. Why not join us to pass on the thatching tradition to the next generation through “Kayakaki”?

Since Miyama experience heavy snow during the winter, the Pampas grass will fall under the weight of the snow. So “Kayakaki” needed to be completed before the first heavy snowfall. The Pampas grasses are bundled and formed into a cone-shaped tower “Kayatate” to withstand against the snowfall, and dried until spring when snow thaw.
